Is The Tooth Whitening Strip Great or Just a Hoax?
Date Added: August 21, 2010 03:29:03 AM

About everyone has heard of the tooth whitening strips and the wonders they supposedly perform. There are those who will swear by them, and will go as far as to claim they're even better than professional tooth whitening.

But just how true is this? Can they really compete with the tooth whitening gels, or the tooth whitening trays, or other similar systems? Well, let's take a look at how these products work.

First, we'll look at the tooth whitening strips. What they are, is a unique bleaching system. They're clear strips made of plastic, that are coated with a carbamide peroxide of between six and ten percent concentration. They are made for wearing over your teeth a couple of times a day for thirty minutes a session. The upper strip is designed in a specific way and the bottom as well. You can apply them very easily and other people can hardly notice them. This means you can wear them just about any time of day without feeling embarrassed or self-conscious.

Now let's look into whether or not these strips are effective. Again, they fit directly onto the front of your teeth and won't cause pain and discomfort like many other products. The bleaching solution that's on them is a very effective whitening solution. The strips deliver the solution well and you can see results in just a few days.

But there is one intense drawback, and it's known as 'striping'. This usually doesn't get mentioned by those who push the tooth whitening strips. Striping means that some areas between the teeth didn't get reached by the strips, and therefore didn't get bleached. This can be a frightening experience.

Let's now have a look at the prices. These strips are not expensive. It depends on the brand you buy, but about the cheapest strips going will run you around $25.

There are some alternatives you can still do at home. Tooth whitening trays are one. Many claim that the trays are far superior to the strips due to the fact that they enable your teeth to completely submerge into the tooth whitening solution. But then some complain about the discomfort. This is especially true with the generic trays that are made to fit everyone. The best one are custom made specifically for your teeth. They're a lot more comfortable and give good comprehensive whitening.

And now we have the dentist. There's nothing that can compare to having a professional dentist do the job. It's by far the best way to go, provided you can afford it. It does cost a lot more, from $500 up to $2000 a treatment. So if you're looking to whiten your own teeth, then it may be a good idea to give the strips a try and see how it goes. Then if that doesn't get it, try a tray. This could save you lots of money before giving the dentist a try. But don't worry, the dentist will still be there.
